Another Nutro Recall

Yet another recall of Nutro products. Some of their puppy food may contain plastic. Please see Christie Keith's blog at Pet Connection for more detailed information.

I am really disgusted with Nutro. They have a lot of recalls and even more mysterious quality control problems that go unaddressed. They have a habit of denying that there's anything wrong until the complaints pile up to numbers that can not be ignored, then they do a poor job announcing the recall and communicating with their customers.

This is a company that built it's reputation on quality and responsibility, for not containing the toxic chemicals that are in so many grocery store brands ... but having one problem after another, acknowledging those problems only when forced to, then trying to play it down as much as possible by failing to communicate clearly and effectively with their customers, doesn't do much to help their reputation in my opinion.

Nutro needs new public relations and quality control staff.

Feed raw. No chemicals, only food the way nature intended. You buy it, you feed it, you know what your pet is eating.

Thank you. I have been feeding raw for about three years now and I totally agree. I still follow what's going on with commercial food because it effects so many people and animals that I know.

Hi Lindsey,

I feel Science Diet, I am a Vet Tech and live in New Jersey. I heard about the Nutro recall, that's very scary. Yet people continue to buy their food, I dont understand it. This is their second recall this year. I know there are alot of marketing myth's out there like the Corn Myth, and By-Product Myth...funny enough Nutro and more natural foods made up these marketing lies. I have a 14 year old lab and he couldnt be healthier I only wish I could reverse his age to make him live longer :)

Just wanted to add my comment ;)

I am glad that your dog has lived to a ripe old age. Sometimes it's diet, sometimes it's good genes :) My experience with Science Diet was not a positive one and I know I am not alone in that regard. The vet I worked for also sold it, it is a very lucrative product that enables many veterinarians to pay for new equipment and extra staff. Hills invests a great deal of money in veterinary schools across the country and continues to court veterinarians after they go into private practice much the way pharmaceutical companies court doctors. It's easy to understand why so many vets recommend a product that they are familiar with, especially when a good chunk of their education has been provided by the company that produces said product. That does not make it the best. There is no "corn myth". Open your dog's mouth and look at his teeth. He is a carnivore. Carnivores eat animals, not highly processed grains. Most Science Diet kibble is almost entirely corn. Common sense says that is not an appropriate diet for a carnivore. Yes, dogs are opportunists, they can eat some grains and fruits and vegetables and derive nutrition from it, but that does not change the fact that the optimal diet for a carnivore is meat based. The concern about by-products is that the term is a catch-all, anything goes, and at the rendering plant, that usually includes plastic and Styrofoam packaging, euthanized animals (both livestock and pets), sawdust etc. This is not myth, those reports come from employees at rendering plants.
I do feel the need to state clearly that Nutro is NOT a premium pet food. They market themselves as such, but they have a long history of quality control issues that have not improved since they were bought out by Mars. If one wants to feed a commercial diet, there are far better foods out there; Evo, Wellness, Nature's Variety, Timberwolf and Wysong, to name a few.
